Job Description: Applications and Data Programmer – Finance Information Technology and Innovation (FITI)
The Finance Information Technology and Innovation (FITI) department at Virginia Tech harnesses technology to optimize the operational landscape of the Vice President for Finance’s senior management area and its associated university constituents. FITI is seeking an Applications and Data Programmer to join the dynamic FITI Business Application Solutions team in designing, developing, and supporting creative technology solutions aimed at improving administrative efficiency and advancing data collection and reporting capabilities.
Position Overview:
As the Applications and Data Programmer, you will play a key role in providing technical and data-driven expertise across multiple areas:
- Development and maintenance of data management systems and processes.
- Creation of data collection and reporting applications.
- Design and support of web-based systems and reports.
Your primary responsibilities include analyzing the technology needs of end users, crafting strategies to address those needs, designing and implementing agreed-upon solutions, and ensuring compliance with university, state, and federal laws, policies, and regulations. You’ll be entrusted with managing multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks independently to meet deadlines, and providing scheduled support for cyclical operations requiring business IT and reporting expertise.
The Applications and Data Programmer will deliver responsive, efficient, and courteous service to the departments reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Chief Financial Officer, supporting their data management and reporting needs.

Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education.
- Hands-on experience with relational database design, SQL, and data retrieval.
- Competency in object-oriented design concepts and web development.
- Ability to translate user specifications into functional project requirements and model complex business processes.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects, independently prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines.
- Strong communication skills to convey complex concepts in ways appropriate to various audiences.
- Demonstrated capacity to work in a team environment with minimal supervision, along with effective verbal and written communication.
Preferred Qualifications:
- An advanced degree in Business Information Technology, Information Systems, Computer Science, or a related field (or equivalent education and experience).
- Experience developing applications using the .NET framework (e.g., C#) and Microsoft Office 365 technologies.
- Proficiency with business intelligence (BI) or report development tools.
- Previous experience in supporting production applications.
- Familiarity with basic financial and accounting practices.
- 3 years of experience as an SDLC programmer.
Position Details:
- Status: Exempt (not eligible for overtime).
- Appointment Type: Regular.
- Salary Range: $72,500–$97,000.
- Work Schedule: 40 hours per week.
