About the Role
The John Innes Centre Collections include:
- John Innes Archives: Encompassing over 300 years of historical records related to the Innes family, alongside institutional and scientific records from 1910 to the present day.
- Special Collections: Featuring the JIF Rare Books (spanning works as early as 1511), the History of Genetics Library, and the annotated libraries of William Bateson and Cyril Darlington.
As a qualified archivist, the successful candidate will manage and curate these collections, leading projects, programs, and activities aimed at enhancing engagement and access for both internal and external users. They will play an integral role in developing and delivering collaborative outreach initiatives related to the historical collections, ideally bringing a passion for the history of science.
While primarily working independently, the Archivist will be embedded within the Communications and Engagement team, working collaboratively to deliver events and activities. They will also have close ties to the Norwich Bioscience Institutes Library team. Key responsibilities include processing new accessions, managing and updating a digital catalog, and overseeing the existing collections.
This role involves sharing insights from the collections with a broader audience and encouraging their use by researchers, collaborators, and the public. Significant on-site work in Norwich will be required, with the option for some hybrid working arrangements.
About You
We are seeking a proactive professional with the expertise and vision to manage and develop the Centre’s Collections, including integrating born-digital records (e.g., organizational history and “life at JIC”) into the archive. This will involve designing and implementing new systems to ensure accessibility for diverse audiences.
The ideal candidate will bring:
- A recognized qualification or equivalent experience in digital preservation as well as archiving, curation, or a related field (e.g., libraries or museums).
- Proven expertise in physical and digital preservation with the ability to align practices to archival standards and develop effective solutions.
- Experience working on research projects, including conducting evaluations, identifying information sources, and disseminating findings.
- A strong background as a digital archivist, curator, or museum professional, including collaborations with external partners.
