ECMWF is actively seeking a dedicated and driven Cloud Platform Engineer to tackle platform engineering challenges and enhance the monitoring capabilities for deploying applications in the ambit of the Destination Earth Data Bridges project.

As a critical partner delivering the European Commission’s ambitious Destination Earth (DestinE) project, ECMWF’s role encompasses supporting the integration of software within the Data Bridges framework—a complex assembly of software systems hosted across numerous EuroHPC Cloud Computing environments. In this capacity, you will engage with developers producing applications and services to augment the DT warehouse facet of DestinE Data Bridges, focusing on boosting system-level efficacy and monitoring granularity.

Within ECMWF, a collaborative and fervent group is united in their mission to spearhead advancements in numerical weather prediction and, more recently, high-resolution climate simulation. The incumbent will not only apply ECMWF’s well-honed operational procedures but will also oversee the deployment and surveillance of both existing and novel applications across diverse Data Bridge setups. A key expectation is the delivery of innovative solutions aimed at ensuring that heterogeneous software environments maintain superior quality and reliability standards.

The position resides within the Platform Engineering team, which falls under the Application Delivery Section of the Computing Department. The department’s mandate is to furnish a plethora of platforms and services, enabling ECMWF teams to exploit computing resources across different layers like PaaS and SaaS and to consistently roll out applications with various degrees of backing. These deployments aim to meet rigorous quality and reliability benchmarks.

To achieve these objectives, the Section stays at the forefront of innovation in critical domains such as automated systems administration, reliable application deployment and operations, identity and access management, container orchestration, and monitoring—including logging and tracing—alongside PaaS/SaaS application engineering.

This contract is integral to the Delivery Earth initiative and envisions close collaboration with activities in ECMWF Member States and partnerships with ESA and EUMETSAT.

The Destination Earth Initiative:
Commissioned by the European Commission, the Destination Earth (DestinE) initiative, which ECMWF is tasked to implement alongside partners ESA and EUMETSAT, envisions the creation of highly detailed Digital Twins of Earth. These dynamic models aim to closely monitor the interaction between environmental change and human activities, enabling the formulation and examination of various scenarios that contribute to sustainable development and support European policies in alignment with the Green Deal. ECMWF is charged with crafting these digital twins, as well as developing the core software required to run them on some of the most potent supercomputers in Europe, those of the European HPC Joint Undertaking. The upcoming phase of DestinE will span from June 2024 to May 2026, with future developments contingent on sustained funding and organizational needs.
