At the University of East London (UEL), we focus on preparing students to thrive in the careers of tomorrow, while contributing to a future that is inclusive and sustainable. As a careers-focused institution, we are dedicated to making education accessible to everyone and recognize that diversity—in people and perspectives—is key to addressing society’s greatest challenges.
Founded in 1898 as the West Ham Technical Institute, UEL has a long-standing tradition of promoting industry-linked education and social advancement. Our commitment to widening access to vocational and professional learning earned us the nickname “The People’s University.” Over the years, our scale and ambitions have grown, but our mission remains the same: empowering communities, driving social justice, and equipping students with the skills to adapt and succeed in an ever-changing world.
Today, UEL advances this purpose through cutting-edge research, strong partnerships with employers, and significant community engagement. We actively work to address health and economic disparities, champion sustainability, and encourage inclusivity to create a resilient future.
Our forward-thinking Vision 2028 strategy guides the transformation of education at UEL, ensuring everyone is empowered with the skills and opportunities needed to excel. National recognition for our dedication to excellence includes being named University of the Year for Teaching Quality in the Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2025. At UEL, we go beyond teaching—we innovate, inspire, and empower, working collaboratively to shape the future.
