Role Overview

Join the University of Birmingham as part of a dynamic digital education team, working to advance the University’s strategic goals of expanding its academic offerings and enhancing digital education capabilities. Through targeted investment and the effective use of existing resources, the role focuses on designing and supporting innovative, pedagogically sound blended and online learning experiences.

Key Responsibilities

Reporting to the College Head of Digital Education (or their nominee), your role will involve supporting the College Digital Education Team and the wider Digital Education Department, which spans the University’s five main colleges.

Your core responsibilities will include:

  • Contributing to the delivery of the College’s Digital Learning Strategy and advising on the design of evidence-based blended and online learning.
  • Collaborating with academics, administrators, and other team members to effectively utilize the Virtual Learning Environment (Canvas) and related tools.
  • Designing and developing innovative, high-quality learning materials and course content, with input from subject matter experts and, where necessary, external content developers.
  • Acting as the key contact for second-line VLE support within the College.
  • Providing expert guidance and support for integrating generative AI tools into digital education strategies.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience

The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:

  • A degree (or equivalent qualification) or relevant technical certification with significant experience in similar roles. In the absence of formal qualifications, proven extensive practical and technical experience in a related area will be required.
  • Comprehensive experience in instructional/learning design within a higher education context across a broad subject spectrum.
  • Specialist knowledge of Virtual Learning Environments (e.g., Canvas) and associated systems as tools to support teaching and learning.
  • Clear understanding of generative AI models and their application within digital education settings, along with the ability to train academic staff in their usage.
  • Strong written communication skills, numeracy, and the ability to analyze information and data effectively.
  • Knowledge of the Equality Act 2010, with a demonstrated ability to ensure equity and fairness for individuals with protected characteristics in daily activities.

Desirable Skills & Experience

  • Previous experience collaborating with academic staff and working with learning technologies in blended learning environments.
  • Media production skills, including the ability to film and edit content using tools like Adobe Premiere Pro or Final Cut, for professional-level outputs.
