Overview of Role:
The Department of Brain Sciences is on a mission to curate a noteworthy selection of translational research in neuroscience and mental health, gaining international acclaim for its scientific prowess, innovation in patient care, and mentorship of future leaders. Integral to this objective is the adherence to the highest standards of scientific integrity and the cultivation of a collaborative, diverse, and welcoming workplace.

Similarly, the Department of Immunology and Inflammation is dedicated to bridging the gap between pioneering science and clinical application, with the goal of mitigating or curing inflammatory and blood disorders. They are committed to uncovering the crucial links between immunity and illness and leveraging this knowledge to enhance molecular medicine approaches in clinical settings. The Department boasts a collaborative and stimulating multidisciplinary research atmosphere, encouraging joint efforts from clinical and non-clinical researchers to deepen our understanding of disease and develop innovative translational strategies.

The role in question aligns with both Departments’ strategic emphasis on advancing equality, diversity, inclusion (EDI), sense of belonging, and workplace culture. The appointee will assume a pivotal role in formulating, executing, and evaluating department-specific initiatives to cultivate a more inclusive environment, particularly for underrepresented groups in academia. This will involve close coordination with the College’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Centre and HR teams, extending across the broader Faculty and College.

Tasked with analyzing diverse data sets to pinpoint opportunities for betterment and growth within processes related to departmental ethos, recruitment, advancement, and admissions, the selected individual will identify informational voids, seek solutions, and spearhead issue resolution with implications for the short term. In collaboration with key College associates, they will further recommend strategies for managing intricate situations to the departments.

Key Responsibilities:

– Champion and implement the Departments’ EDI goals and strategies, harmonizing with overall College objectives. Convene and analyze Equality Impact Assessments for specific local operations and systems, liaising with University’s EDI Centre team.
– Utilize both qualitative and quantitative data assessments to discern and execute local priorities and plans that yield tangible, positive shifts in EDI results, collaborating with EDIC and the Strategic Support Team.
– Offer comprehensive support to the Departments’ Athena SWAN self-Assessment Team, directing the action plan and managing renewal submissions.
– Stay informed on impending and new legal frameworks, governmental propositions, and developments across the higher education landscape to inform departmental best practice.
– Coordinate and spearhead workshops, discussion groups, and training sessions spanning various equity-related themes; engage in practice-enhancing seminars and forums within and beyond the department, such as workshops following departmental surveys and specialized focus groups.
– Craft and present briefings to leadership and team coordinators, distilling research findings, suggesting procedural alterations, and detailing implementation strategies in concert with department heads and the EDIC and Strategic Support teams.
– Lead or oversee the management of departmental EDI projects, supporting initiative leaders to ensure timely realization of goals.

Essential Criteria:

– A-Level education or equivalent, or professional know-how pertinent to the role’s demands.
– Awareness of the equality and diversity hurdles encountered in large, multifaceted organizations.
– Understanding of the Athena SWAN charter.
– Proficient in the evaluation, documentation, and analysis of data.
– Familiarity with higher education procedures and policies, and current sector-spanning concerns.
– Cultural awareness and sensitivity.
– Proactive, enthusiastic, with a profound personal dedication to advancing equality, diversity, and inclusiveness.
