About the Role:

The Facility Science Support Technician plays a vital role within the dynamic team at the UK’s deep underground science facility, Boulby Underground Laboratory. This facility is at the forefront of science, hosting a range of innovative research projects. The position supports these projects by providing vital technical, scientific, and operational assistance, ensuring the smooth running of experiments and contributing to the overall success of the laboratory.

The Boulby team is small but dedicated, taking pride in a hands-on, cooperative approach to managing a diverse set of responsibilities. As Facility Science Support Technician, you’ll support hosted experiments, assist with facility management, and help strengthen communication and outreach efforts.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Apply scientific, technical, and engineering knowledge to support experiments and facility operations.
  • Develop and oversee health and safety (H&S) protocols for experiments within the lab.
  • Lead the design and implementation of organizational and communication systems for effective science delivery.
  • Aid in the installation, maintenance, and development of experiments, including providing technical adaptations as required.
  • Manage experiments by supporting operations, calibrations, monitoring, and analyzing data.
  • Maintain operational records and oversee purchasing for experimental equipment.
  • Act as a liaison with laboratory/mine personnel to address experimental and outreach needs.
  • Supervise visiting scientists and public participants during lab tours, while representing the facility at meetings and stakeholder events.
  • Contribute to stakeholder outreach and communication initiatives.
  • Undertake H&S and technical training as needed for professional development.
  • Assist in keeping facility communications and organizational systems up to date and aligned with evolving needs.

Position Requirements:

Important Note: This role requires working underground. Therefore, the successful candidate must be able to adhere to strict health and safety protocols, work comfortably in a mining/laboratory environment, and use the necessary protective equipment in an underground setting.

Essential Criteria:

  • A degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant science or engineering discipline.
  • Strong technical, IT, and/or engineering skills gained in a science support or delivery role.
  • Excellent organizational skills and the ability to manage complex or varied operations effectively.
  • Strong communication skills, enabling collaboration with scientists, engineers, mining staff, the public, and key stakeholders.
  • Experience in public engagement or enthusiasm for participating in public outreach and customer engagement.
  • A positive, proactive, and adaptable attitude in delivering the facility’s vision and goals, as well as a commitment to team collaboration.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and take on emerging responsibilities as required.
  • Flexibility to work collaboratively in a small, active team within a unique environment.

Additional Criteria:

  • Onsite presence is mandatory; this role cannot be done remotely.
  • Previous experience in an underground science facility is essential.
