Anderson Quigley is thrilled to partner with Arizona State University (ASU) London in the recruitment of a Head of Business Systems, the organisation’s most senior IT leadership position.
About ASU London:
ASU London represents a pivotal milestone in UK Higher Education. Following the acquisition and subsequent rebranding of The Engineering & Design Institute London (TEDI-London), ASU London builds on TEDI’s mission-oriented and innovative foundations. Under the leadership of Arizona State University, the institution now embarks on a new phase of growth, expansion, and institutional development.
Regarded as one of the most innovative universities worldwide, Arizona State University has consistently been ranked the number one U.S. institution for innovation. It is celebrated for its global perspective, applied learning approach, and strong industry partnerships. ASU London brings this renowned academic philosophy, prestige, and ambition to the UK higher education landscape, establishing itself as a distinctive institution with international influence and long-term backing.
About the Role:
This is a permanent position, located in London, with on-site working required for three days a week. Initially, the role will be based at ASU London’s Canada Water campus, with a planned relocation to Clerkenwell by 2026. A full-time working arrangement is preferred, though part-time candidates wishing to work four days per week will be considered.
Role Overview:
ASU London is seeking an experienced and dynamic IT leader to head its technology function during a critical stage of its evolution. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer, the Head of Business Systems will provide strategic direction and hands-on management across all areas of IT, digital infrastructure, and business systems, ensuring that technology supports the university’s growth, aligns with regulatory requirements, and delivers exceptional experiences for both students and staff.
As the leading IT role within ASU London, this position demands a leadership style that strikes a balance between strategic oversight and operational involvement (“one sleeve rolled up, one sleeve rolled down”). Responsibilities include developing a robust IT roadmap to support institutional growth, while maintaining secure and reliable fundamental systems. Key areas of focus will include strengthening governance and compliance (meeting OfS regulations and HE data reporting requirements), managing core systems like the student records system, LMS, and CRM, overseeing supplier relationships, and successfully supporting the university’s upcoming campus relocation while ensuring seamless continuity of services.
The successful candidate will oversee a small in-house team, supported by contractors and external providers. This requires sound judgement on balancing in-house capabilities with outsourcing solutions and ensuring value for money.
Future Growth:
As ASU London continues to grow, this role offers significant potential for progression. With increased scale and operational complexity, there is a clear pathway for this position to evolve into a Director-level role with a broader strategic scope in the future.
Key Requirements:
- Previous experience within the Higher Education sector is essential, particularly navigating regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of OfS requirements, HESA data reporting, and higher education governance/compliance.
- In-depth knowledge of modern university systems and architectures, including student record systems, CRM, LMS, and Microsoft-based platforms.
- Proven experience in vendor, supplier, and contract management.
- Demonstrated ability to operate confidently at leadership level, while remaining hands-on as needed.
- Excellent judgement and leadership credibility, with a student- and service-focused mindset.
- Strong communication skills to articulate IT strategies effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
