We are seeking an exceptional academic with outstanding interpersonal and leadership abilities to head the Information and Computational Sciences (ICS) department.

The James Hutton Institute is a globally recognized research organization dedicated to advancing science that enhances food and environmental security while supporting sustainable communities. ICS is one of the five scientific departments within the Institute, comprising approximately 50 researchers. The department conducts cutting-edge work in areas such as bioinformatics, geoinformatics, soil science, community planning, policy appraisal, risk assessment, integrated complex systems modeling, research computing, and high-performance computing (HPC). Collaborations extend across the Institute, with BioSS, and with national and international computational science groups, ensuring our research leverages the latest advancements in computational sciences. The successful candidate will lead and manage the ICS department, including responsibilities such as strategic planning, budget oversight, and aligning research capabilities to deliver the Institute’s science strategy at the highest level of quality. Maintaining the integrity and ethics of research, compliance with quality management systems, and adherence to HSQE standards will also fall under their purview.

In addition to departmental leadership, the successful candidate will play a vital role in shaping the broader strategic direction of the Institute as part of the Institute Management Team, in collaboration with the Digital Transformation Office and other relevant committees.

We are seeking a candidate with an international reputation in one or more of the ICS department’s scientific focus areas. They will be expected to engage in knowledge exchange through diverse platforms and events. We highly value candidates with senior management experience, expertise in interdisciplinary environments, and established relationships with various stakeholders.

This position can be based out of either our Aberdeen or Dundee campuses, where the department is distributed. Regular travel between campuses will be required.
