IT Support Engineer at the German Historical Institute London

The German Historical Institute London (GHIL), situated in the vibrant and multicultural Bloomsbury area of London, is seeking a service-oriented and solution-focused IT Support Engineer. GHIL is an independent academic institution that is part of the Max Weber Foundation – German Humanities Institutes Abroad. Our focus includes research on British–German relations, British history, and colonial history, with a comparative, transcultural, and global approach.

About the Role:

  • Position: Full-time (40h/week); job sharing possible
  • Salary: £41,286 – £44,136 annually, depending on experience
  • Location: London with limited mobile working opportunities
  • Extra Hours: Occasional evenings or Saturdays due to events

As an IT Support Engineer, you will manage the information and communication technology needs of GHIL, a key member institute of the Max Weber Foundation. You will collaborate with the Bonn office, which oversees foundation-wide IT services and infrastructures shared by all institutes. You will serve as the primary contact for approximately 35 employees in London and provide comprehensive IT support across all departments.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support: Local and remote desktop support for colleagues
  • Troubleshooting: Basic issue resolution on Windows, Android, Mac, and iOS devices
  • Coordination: Manage on-site service providers and hardware/software procurement
  • Collaboration: Work closely with the IT team in Bonn on planning, design, and IT frameworks
  • Network: Support and troubleshoot network issues
  • Event Support: Organize and oversee IT aspects of internal and external events
  • Digitization Projects: Contribute to the institute’s digitization initiatives
  • Working Group: Participate in the IT working group of the Max Weber Foundation
  • Security: Consult with the IT security officer in Bonn

Opportunities exist for engaging in challenging projects and enhancing your skill set through various IT training courses and, if interested, German language courses.

About You:

  • Qualifications: IT degree, apprenticeship, advanced training, or comparable experience
  • Experience: Significant IT-related experience
  • Skills: Proactive initiative, excellent communication, teamwork, solution-oriented mindset, good PC and network troubleshooting skills, advanced knowledge of MS Office 365, Zoom, Windows, and MacOS, understanding of video conferencing systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Virtualization concepts
  • Backup systems
  • IT project implementation
  • Experience in non-profit/academic sectors
  • Optional German language skills
