We are in search of an enthusiastic individual to become a part of the core infrastructure team at one of the leading research universities globally. As a Systems Administrator, you’ll engage with enterprise technologies in a dynamic and evolving technical landscape, leading a team responsible for maintaining crucial IT platforms that support essential University operations.
Position Details:
This is a permanent role with an expectation of 35 hours per week (Monday to Friday), including occasional out-of-hours work. We value flexibility and are open to considering various working arrangements such as compressed hours or staggered start/finish times. The role offers flexibility to work between home, our data centers, and our office with a scenic view of Edinburgh Castle.

Job Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of seven IT infrastructure engineers in the Enterprise Services section, managing services across Windows and Linux infrastructures.
- Innovate and modernize services, delivering from on-premise infrastructure and future hybrid multi-cloud platforms, while maintaining legacy systems.
- Secure and maintain the IT services within the team’s portfolio.
- Collaborate on services such as email infrastructure, directory services, data backups, and authentication services.
- Ensure day-to-day resolution of support calls and service requests aligns with agreed service levels.
- Partner closely with the Section Manager to provide high availability of the University’s IT services.
- Contribute to projects aimed at enhancing the University’s IT services.
Candidate Profile:
Essential Skills:
- Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
- Proven staff management experience with the ability to mentor and support team members and others across the University.
- Awareness and commitment to IT security issues.
- Ability to stay current with emerging technologies and inform effective decision-making.
- Deep understanding of University IT policies, facilities, and technical environments.
- Demonstrable experience with system administration on networked Windows/Unix/Linux servers and relevant technologies (e.g., storage management, web servers, virtualization).
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a creative approach to solutions.
- Effective communicator with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Ability to adapt to changing demands, manage high-priority tasks, and maintain high standards under pressure.
- Team player who can work collaboratively with various stakeholders.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with large-scale physical, virtualized infrastructure, and application networking technologies.
- Experience managing Azure hosted services and EntraID.
- Knowledge of scripting languages such as Bash, PowerShell, Python, and Puppet DSL.
