The University of Cambridge is currently seeking a candidate for a one-year sandwich placement serving as an IT support technician within the renowned MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit. More details about the Unit are available at www.mrc-mbu.cam.ac.uk. The team includes over a hundred scientists (staff, visitors, postgraduate students) and ten administrative or support employees.
A trio of IT experts within the Unit offers a range of IT services vital to the research activities and coordinates integration with the University’s central IT and communications services. The incoming team member will join forces with the IT staff, delivering direct support to Unit members and playing a role in managing essential components of the IT infrastructure. The successful candidate will be supervised by the Unit’s IT Technician but will be part of a collaborative effort to deliver optimal service to the Unit.
This position entails both first and second-tier IT support tasks, such as resolving complex technical problems, alongside tasks like server backups and execution of minor projects, for example, updating desktop systems. Depending on the new staff member’s skillset, there may also be the opportunity to manage certain technical services within the IT Department.
The Unit boasts an IT framework that includes 250 desktop and laptop PCs, 40 physical and virtual servers, and a 1,000-core High-Performance Computing (HPC) setup with over one Petabyte (PB) of FibreChannel SAN storage. Apple iMacs make up the desktop landscape, while Windows OS is typically found on scientific equipment interfaces. CentOS/RedHat Linux features prominently within the server environment, complemented by a selection of Windows Server systems supporting an Active Directory Domain and other niche services. Cisco Catalyst technology underpins the Unit’s network infrastructure.
Candidates are expected to submit a resume, a cover letter detailing their suitability for the role, and the contact details of two professional references as part of their application.
