Job Opportunity: IT Training and Development Officer
Location: Joseph Priestley Building, Birmingham City University

Birmingham City University (BCU) is an innovative and vibrant place to study, situated in the heart of Birmingham. We are delighted to offer an exciting opportunity to become part of our IT Department as an IT Training and Development Officer.

Role Overview

The IT Training Team at BCU leads the implementation of the University’s IT Training Strategy and manages the IT Academy, focusing on enhancing the digital literacy and eLearning skills of students and graduates. This involves developing and delivering learning materials to foster both technical and business skills required by staff and students.

As an IT Training and Development Officer, you will:

  • Support and train staff and students in using various software and applications.
  • Assist at university events such as open days and the Welcome Week program.
  • Shape and drive the University’s IT Training Strategy.
  • Use diverse training techniques and platforms, including eLearning, virtual classrooms, self-assessment tools, peer-assisted learning, and digital simulations, to deliver impactful learning experiences.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver IT training to staff and students using appropriate methods, tools, and tailored content.
  • Offer detailed guidance and respond to IT-related queries via the IT Service Desk.
  • Maintain and update IT training records and the University’s published training portfolio.
  • Develop and manage training materials, including instructional video content.
  • Design and facilitate workshops for users at starter, beginner, and intermediate levels across various applications and software.
  • Create and deliver digital and online learning resources, such as eLearning modules.
  • Align the training portfolio with the IT Training Strategy to provide consistent, quality learning opportunities.
  • Oversee the delivery of IT Staff Induction sessions.
  • Evaluate, refine, and improve training methods and content, ensuring continuous service enhancement.
  • Explore innovative approaches to IT training and recommend solutions.
  • Contribute to IT project success by creating effective training frameworks.
  • Support and mentor participants in the IT Academy program.

Key Requirements

The ideal candidate should have the following:

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional qualification.
  • Experience in providing support for teaching, training, and instructional activities.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Cloud and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to inspire, persuade, and influence diverse audiences.
  • Familiarity with tools and services available in training-related environments.
  • Knowledge of information-gathering methods, tools, and techniques relevant to training needs and source materials.
  • Strong understanding of effective presentation methods and time management for creating and delivering learning content.

The appointed candidate will ordinarily be employed by BCU Support Services Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Birmingham City University. However, appointees with prior LGPS membership who wish to enter the scheme will be employed directly by Birmingham City University.
