About the Role
Lincoln Cathedral, in collaboration with the Lincoln Record Society, is seeking a dedicated Librarian to manage and develop its esteemed historic library collections. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape the future of the Cathedral’s research collections and foster scholarly collaborations.
In this role, the successful candidate will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Cathedral library, ensure researchers can access its collections, and engage the broader academic and public communities. The Librarian will also play a pivotal role in reopening the Medieval and Christopher Wren Libraries while defining their future contribution to the Cathedral’s heritage and mission.
Working alongside the Canon Chancellor and other colleagues, the Librarian will contribute to establishing a comprehensive Library, Archive, and Research Centre. This initiative intends to enhance research, strengthen partnerships, and foster public engagement with the Cathedral’s historic resources.
Additionally, the role provides an exciting opportunity to collaborate with key stakeholders, including the Lincoln Record Society, local universities, and the Diocese of Lincoln.
Key Responsibilities
The Librarian will:
- Manage the Cathedral library and ensure researchers can access its collections.
- Increase academic engagement by promoting the collections through publications, research conferences, and other scholarly initiatives.
- Develop exhibitions and public outreach activities to share the library’s treasures more widely.
- Catalogue early printed books in line with professional standards.
- Establish and maintain a vibrant online platform to showcase the library’s collections.
- Supervise the Assistant Librarian, student placements, and volunteers.
- Contribute to educational programs and events related to the Cathedral’s collections.
- Support the creation and ongoing development of the Library, Archive, and Research Centre.
About You
We are looking for a candidate with a blend of scholarly expertise and a passion for outreach and public engagement.
Essential Requirements:
- Degree-level education and a postgraduate qualification in library, archive, or information studies (or equivalent experience).
- Training in historical or descriptive bibliography.
- Familiarity with medieval and early modern palaeography.
- Experience working with medieval manuscripts or rare books.
- Ability to deliver academic and public outreach activities effectively.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Excellent IT skills and keen attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while fostering collaboration with colleagues and external partners.
Desirable Experience:
- Expertise in cataloguing manuscripts or early printed books.
- Knowledge of digital tools related to historical collections.
- A working proficiency in Latin or other relevant languages.
- Experience in editing historical documents or manuscripts.
- Competence in project management.
