Position: Libraries Assistant
Working Hours: 36.25 hours per week
Location: Magdalene College, Cambridge
Magdalene College is renowned as one of Cambridge’s most beautiful colleges, boasting the longest river frontage among all Cambridge colleges. Conveniently positioned near the city centre but maintaining a peaceful setting, Magdalene provides a unique work environment.
The College is seeking a dedicated Libraries Assistant to support the daily operations of the Magdalene Libraries. The role involves a variety of responsibilities, including supervising public and reader access to the historic libraries, assisting with special events, and ensuring the libraries remain safe, welcoming, and well-maintained spaces.
Key Responsibilities:
In the first year, the role will have a specific focus on the preparations for the reopening of the Pepys Library, which includes:
- Assisting the Pepys Fellow Librarian and Special Collections Librarian.
- Supervising volunteers, conservators, removal staff, and others.
- Preparing labels for book crates and meticulously recording the location of collection items during the process.
- Reshelving books with care and accuracy following their return.
Essential Requirements:
- A minimum of three A-levels at grade C or above.
- Experience working in an academic environment or using an academic library.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
Desirable Skills and Qualifications:
- A degree or an interest in pursuing a career in library work.
- Experience dealing with the general public.
- Knowledge of handling and managing digital images.
- Familiarity with image-sharing platforms like Dropbox or WeTransfer.
Salary and Benefits:
- Full-time position (36.25 hours per week).
- Salary: up to £25,040 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience.
