The MRC Epidemiology Unit is currently seeking a dedicated Principal Software Developer to join our Digital Tools Team at our base of operations. This vital role encompasses the maintenance and enhancement of our innovative open-source web application, Intake24, a pivotal tool that captures and analyzes dietary intake data. Intake24 is utilized in significant research projects, such as the UK National Diet and Nutrition Survey Rolling Programme, and is continually adapted for diverse populations and contexts, like South Asian settings.

The selected individual will integrate into our Intake24 development collective, collaborate intensively with the Dietary Assessment Platform researchers, and engage with various project groups to establish, sustain, and refine tools that aggregate, store, and manage research data effectively.

The candidate we are looking for will bring a wealth of experience in working with the Intake24 platform to the table. They should be a proficient full-stack Typescript engineer who is adept in crafting and sustaining RESTful APIs, constructing front-end web clients that utilize internal or external APIs, and committed to ensuring impeccable code integrity through version control, code reviews, automated testing, and CI/CD workflows. The role extends into the DevOps realm, with a strong preference for candidates familiar with automation tools (such as Ansible) and those with prior experience in deploying services on cloud infrastructures. Additionally, candidates possessing general programming skills in languages like Python or PHP and having a firm grasp of relational databases (like Postgres or MySQL) for application development and data processing will be highly regarded.

As part of our remuneration package, we offer a competitive salary, along with a comprehensive suite of benefits that include shopping discounts, health care options, financial services, and public transport concessions. Our staff are entitled to participate in advantageous pension schemes, and we also provide tax-efficient plans for bicycle and car leasing as well as charity donations.

The MRC Epidemiology Unit is part of the University of Cambridge’s School of Clinical Medicine and operates from the Institute of Metabolic Science, located on the Cambridge Biomedical Campus.
