Boasting an international fellowship of around 16,000 members, the Society supports 32 dedicated research and professional practice groups. Its activities span an impressive range, reaching over three million individuals annually through a breadth of initiatives that go far beyond its member base. The Society orchestrates more than 200 annual events, such as lectures, conferences, and a significant four-day Annual Conference. Its endeavors also include efforts in professional development for geographers, the dissemination of policy discussions, and an array of popular lecture series.

Publication efforts of the Society are evident in its academic journals produced under contract, in addition to the widely-read Geographical magazine. The Society further promotes education and exploration by administering grants designed to back research, field studies, and teaching expeditions. It houses a rich trove of geographical Collections, including historical maps, images, literature, manuscripts, and artifacts. It confers professional accreditation to qualifying members with the designation of Chartered Geographer.

With its roots in an architecturally notable building amidst Kensington gardens just across Hyde Park, the Society operates not only within the UK with nine regional branches but also sustains two international branches. The dedicated staff includes 54 full-time employees, augmented further by part-time, temporary, and volunteer contributors.
