About the Role
We are seeking a driven and detail-oriented individual to join the Prospect Research Team within The Open University’s Development Office. This role offers a unique opportunity to help identify funding opportunities that make a profound impact on the lives of students across the UK and around the globe, while also supporting initiatives that further social, environmental, and research-related advancements.
As part of the Development Office, the Prospect Research Team plays a key role in uncovering and investigating new sources of philanthropic funding for the University. Reporting to the Prospect Research Manager, you will contribute by conducting high-quality, tailored research on major donors, trusts, and corporate partners.
Your primary responsibility will be to deliver in-depth, qualitative research to identify prospective funders and compile comprehensive reports that guide fundraising strategies. While you’ll work closely with the five-member Partnerships & Philanthropy Team, this role also spans support for the Mid-Value and Alumni Fundraising teams.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct thorough, high-quality research on individuals, corporations, and foundations that align with the University’s development goals. Utilize a variety of resources such as biographical, charitable, and financial databases, as well as international news and internal library systems.
- Match prospective funders with University projects by independently identifying and assessing potential opportunities.
- Analyze, interpret, and summarise research findings to produce clear, well-written, and detailed reports.
- Enhance the Development Office’s knowledge of the broader philanthropic landscape, particularly within the UK higher education sector.
- Support the Prospect Research Manager in strategic initiatives by identifying invitees for important events and preparing biographical profiles.
- Perform due diligence on potential donors in accordance with the Development Office’s gift acceptance policies.
- Maintain and update database systems, ensuring information on individuals, corporations, and foundations is accurate, consistent, and in compliance with GDPR regulations.
Skills and Experience
Essential Skills
- Proven experience in qualitative research, with the ability to produce compelling, high-quality reports using a range of sources.
- Strong analytical skills to assess and summarise extensive or complex information.
- Exceptional written communication skills, including a high standard of English and the ability to present research in a clear, accessible manner to non-specialist audiences.
- Proactive mindset with a curious and investigative approach to work.
- Competence in using IT tools, including web search engines, Microsoft Word, and Excel.
- Impeccable attention to detail.
- Ability to work flexibly under pressure, managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines in a dynamic environment.
Desirable Skills
- Experience in prospect research within the Higher Education or charity sector.
- Familiarity with quantitative research methods and financial analysis.
- Understanding of GDPR and data protection regulations.

Work Location:
This position offers hybrid working, accommodating a blend of home and office-based work. While your role is contractually linked to our Milton Keynes office, occasional in-office attendance—estimated at 2–3 times per month—is expected based on business needs. More frequent office presence is optional, depending on your preference.
