Are you passionate about archives and the stories they uncover? The National Archives is seeking a Records Specialist to join our Collections Expertise & Engagement team, where we leverage our knowledge to inspire audiences and encourage new ways of thinking about the importance of archives.

In this role, you will focus on records related to early modern Parliament and its activities. This includes materials from the Parliamentary Archives, which are currently undergoing relocation from the Palace of Westminster to The National Archives at Kew. You will develop an in-depth understanding of these collections, encompassing both official records and private papers, and explore how they differ from and complement The National Archives’ own holdings.

A vital part of the role will involve advising diverse audiences—whether members of the general public, academics, or government departments—on accessing and interpreting these valuable records. You’ll work closely with colleagues to deliver public engagement initiatives, academic research projects, and corporate activities, as well as contribute to collaborative events and exhibitions with the Houses of Parliament.

This is an exciting, multifaceted position that combines research with public outreach. You’ll also support our day-to-day public advisory service, assisting with enquiries at our Kew site and online.

The ideal candidate will hold a higher degree in a relevant field or possess equivalent experience, coupled with a solid understanding of pre-1782 parliamentary records. You should have an active research profile, outstanding communication skills, and the ability to engage both specialist and general audiences. A collaborative approach is essential for success in this role.

Based at our Kew site, the role offers flexibility for some remote working, alongside regular visits to the Palace of Westminster and availability for occasional evening events.

This is a full-time position, though we welcome requests for part-time hours, flexible working arrangements, or job shares, subject to the operational requirements of the department.

If you’re ready to play a pivotal role in shaping the public’s connection to parliamentary history, we’d love to hear from you!
