Role Overview
As a Records Specialist at The National Archives, you’ll engage deeply with a millennium’s worth of records. Your role in the CEE team will involve leveraging your expertise to intellectually stimulate various audiences and transform notions about the purpose and potential of archives. Your initial efforts will include addressing public inquiries about our extensive collection. Further specialization will involve the detailed study of records related to the British Empire and Commonwealth from 1782 onward; this expertise is critical for supporting specialized research and contributing to a range of projects and initiatives. Our collection serves as a vital resource for discussing Britain’s colonial legacy and fostering understanding across the UK and internationally.

Candidate Profile
We seek candidates with specialist knowledge in British colonial/post-colonial history and experience with relevant historical collections in academic or professional settings. The ability to discuss complex historical matters with sensitivity and creativity is essential, as is the capacity to communicate effectively with diverse audiences.
Prospective team members must be comfortable with a mix of remote and in-office work, spending at least 60% of their work hours at our Kew location. Flexibility is needed as the position entails some evening and Saturday commitments to support our service and public engagement programs; compensatory leave will be organized accordingly. Occasional travel to other government departments is also part of the job.
