About the Role

This Research Assistant (RA) position is integral to the RATIONAL project (supporting informed policymaking with Infectious disease modelling, Optimisation And visualisation). The project seeks to enhance public health decision-making by leveraging advanced tools for infectious disease modelling, optimisation, and visualisation.

As part of the Swansea Modelling Team, the RA will be employed for 22 weeks, focusing on developing and applying tools to inform health policy decisions in Wales and Malta. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Running simulations based on existing infectious disease models.
  • Integrating new datasets into models and producing outputs to guide public health policies.
  • Enhancing usability and functionality of tools to meet stakeholder needs.

The RA will undertake specific technical tasks such as improving:

  • The Welsh Model for Covid-19 (WMC).
  • The Policy Evaluation Tool (PET).
  • The Generic Epidemiological Model (GEM) to widen its application to seasonal diseases.

Collaboration and Stakeholder Engagement
The role requires significant interaction with external partners:

  • Cardiff, Wales: Collaborating with the Welsh Government’s Science Evidence Advice Division.

This role offers a unique opportunity to:

  • Contribute to impactful research with tangible societal benefits.
