About the Role
We are looking for a dedicated Research Systems Manager to strengthen and enhance the technological infrastructure supporting our research initiatives. This newly-created role focuses on strategic leadership, development, and delivery of IT services tailored to research activities, particularly Clinical Trials. The post-holder will serve as the driving force for aligning LSHTM’s research groups, Clinical Trials Units across the UK and in international locations (The Gambia and Uganda), Information Technology Services, and the Research Governance and Integrity Office.
The Research Systems Manager will ensure that IT systems facilitating research are robust, compliant with regulatory standards, and accessible to researchers. Responsibilities include advising on appropriate compliance with regulations, maintaining accreditation standards for research IT systems, and overseeing efficient data governance and application systems to support the full research lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
- Build and maintain trust-based relationships to ensure seamless alignment between researchers’ digital and data needs and IT service provisions.
- Provide strategic leadership in areas like data strategy, data management, software development, and information governance for LSHTM’s clinical trials.
- Guide the development and deployment of secure and effective electronic research data collection systems, with oversight of application programming.
- Establish standards for the entire lifecycle of research data management, including practices at non-LSHTM sites accountable to LSHTM.
- Support quality assurance infrastructure across LSHTM departments, including IT, clinical trials, and governance teams.
- Lead the creation, implementation, and evolution of a comprehensive data strategy and roadmap, ensuring customer-focused secure solutions for multi-country and multi-site research contexts.
- Manage and promote LSHTM’s suite of research services, including database applications, clinical trial management systems, IT infrastructure, and associated technologies.

- Education: A postgraduate degree in a relevant field or equivalent professional experience.
- Leadership: Proven ability to inspire, motivate, and develop teams, demonstrating strong leadership capabilities.
- Expertise: Comprehensive knowledge of legislation and frameworks governing clinical research and data governance both in the UK and internationally.
- Innovation: A strong interest in emerging technological solutions for research, with the ability to assess needs and identify optimal tools and strategies.

The Role Details
- Position Type: Full-time (35 hours per week, 1 FTE), permanent
- Salary: Grade 7, £52,581 – £60,191 per annum pro-rata (inclusive of London Weighting)
- Location: Based in London at LSHTM, with hybrid working arrangements (minimum 8 days/month in the office)
- Leave: 30 working days of annual leave, pro-rata for part-time staff, plus discretionary “Wellbeing Days”
