This crucial role requires expertise in system development, integration, and support work, addressing technical issues, implementing creative solutions, and collaborating with internal stakeholders and external vendors to ensure the sustainability and quality of our services. It is both an independent and collaborative role, offering opportunities to shape technology solutions, write scalable and well-documented code, and deliver exceptional service.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Development & Support:
- Provide expert advice and operational support in response to escalated issues from ServiceNow or JIRA regarding Moodle, Echo360, and other digital learning platforms, ensuring users fully benefit from these systems.
- Actively design, develop, test, and maintain robust web applications and frontend/backend services as part of a tight-knit specialist team.
- Collaborate with peers to design, test, and implement effective and innovative solutions.
- Draft documentation to support knowledge sharing and ensure clarity about processes and products.
- Focus on quality through CI/CD and test-driven development practices, enabling the rapid delivery of functional software.
- Communicate effectively with users, translating technical issues into clear, non-jargon explanations.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical challenges and system issues.
- Ensure data confidentiality, integrity, availability, and compliance with information security protocols and data management policies.
- Proactively monitor systems, resolve alerts, and address abnormal functionalities.
- Liaise with internal developers and third-party vendors to ensure productive partnerships and service continuity.
Improving IT Output:
- Adopt modern development frameworks and methodologies such as Agile, CI/CD, TDD, and version control.
- Identify and address recurring technical challenges, delivering root-cause solutions.
- Create and maintain clear technical documentation for systems and processes.
- Contribute to IT team skill development and foster continuous improvement of service delivery.
Projects & Change Management:
- Provide technical leadership and expertise in medium- to large-scale projects.
- Identify risks, escalate issues, and propose efficient solutions as needed.
- Drive change management processes and contribute to the development of well-defined service catalogues.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria:
- Degree-level education or equivalent professional experience.
- Advanced expertise in Moodle, including plugin development and integrations, and proficiency with Echo360 and associated digital learning tools.
- Strong command of Linux command-line tools and system administration.
- Familiarity with modern development methodologies, including Agile, CI/CD pipelines, TDD, version control, and change management.

- Previous experience working within Higher Education institutions.
- Working knowledge of Azure or other cloud computing platforms.
