This newly created part-time position, with a workload of 0.95 FTE (equivalent to 34.675 hours per week), is set to commence in January 2026 and is being offered on a permanent basis. The role is externally funded by the AHRC, with funding subject to review on 31/03/2031.
Role Overview
The successful candidate will serve as the Senior Research Technician for the Biocultural HIVE RICHeS-funded project, located in the Department of Archaeology and History at the University of Exeter. Key responsibilities include overseeing the development, curation, and sustainability of an open-access digital collection management system. This involves ensuring data integrity, compliance with metadata standards, and adopting best practices for digital preservation and interoperability.
Beyond digital preservation, the postholder will facilitate access to the Department’s collections and the newly established Biocultural HIVE laboratory, coordinating access visits and supporting project partners in utilizing the facilities. Additionally, they will collaborate closely with the SHArD 3D Lab, managing resources and specialist equipment to promote access and foster collaboration. This position combines technical and organizational duties with active engagement across the Department and with community partners to ensure seamless integration and accessibility of digital and physical resources within the broader research network of the project.
Organisational Context
The University’s Research Services Division plays an integral role in delivering Strategy 2030, the Research and Impact Strategy, achieving successful REF results, and meeting research income targets. This position falls under the Technical Strategy & Operations area of the Division, which includes technical staff spanning the University of Exeter. These professionals specialize in supporting both research and teaching across various disciplines, including science and humanities, and operate in laboratories, studios, workshops, and field settings.
Technicians within this service contribute to innovative teaching and research, as well as training the next generation of leading scientists and researchers. Roles include experimental officers, laboratory technicians, and research technicians, working across fields such as mechanical/electrical engineering, medicine and health, life sciences, social sciences, film, drama, communications, physics, geology, and geography, among others.
