The Systems Engineer will lead a transformative 25-month project, embedding a scalable, AI-powered digital platform at UB Healthcare Ltd that aims to disrupt the private healthcare sector. This exciting initiative will enhance UB Healthcare’s operational capacity as it positions itself as a national leader in complex community care coordination.

Location:
The successful candidate will be employed by Birmingham City University but will work full-time onsite at UB Healthcare Ltd’s headquarters at Office 7, 16 Highlands Road, Shirley, Solihull, B90 4ND.

Supervision and Mentorship:
The Systems Engineer (KTP Associate) will be supervised jointly by Birmingham City University’s Academic Department of Computer Science and UB Healthcare Ltd’s leadership team. The candidate will benefit from expert academic mentorship and commercial guidance, ensuring the successful delivery of project outcomes and knowledge embedding.

Key Responsibilities:
The Systems Engineer will contribute to various tasks including:

  • Defining project feasibility and requirements.
  • Designing system architecture and a robust data framework.
  • Developing and testing the digital platform.
  • Integrating AI-powered functionality for innovation.
  • Deployment, training, and embedding project knowledge across UB Healthcare.
  • Preparing impact reports, case studies, and dissemination materials.
  • Collaborating on academic outputs such as journal articles and conference papers.
  • Producing training materials to ensure knowledge transfer within the company.

The successful candidate will design, build, and implement an innovative AI-enabled platform revolutionizing how UB Healthcare manages placements, referrals, and brokerage services. They will work closely with senior management, suppliers, and clients to deliver this transformation while applying their expertise to commercial projects.

Skills and Experience:
Applicants must possess:

Essential Skills and Qualifications:

  • A minimum of a 2:1 Honours degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a closely related discipline.
  • Experience in complete software development lifecycle processes (requirements analysis, design, development, testing, deployment).
  • Familiarity with version control systems like Git and technical documentation.
  • Strong programming talents in back-end languages (e.g., Node.js/JavaScript, Python, C#, Java).
  • Front-end development experience in frameworks like React or Angular.
  • Understanding of software architecture principles such as modular design and microservices.
  • Knowledge of relational database design, data modeling, and data governance.
  • Understanding API design and system interoperability concepts.
  • Experience with structured testing approaches (unit, integration, performance testing).

Desirable Skills and Qualifications:

  • A master’s degree or PhD (completed or nearing completion) in a relevant field.
  • Experience in translating business requirements into technical specifications.
  • Familiarity with AI/ML concepts like classification, regression, and model validation.
  • Awareness of software security principles and data protection regulations (e.g., GDPR).
  • Understanding healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Proficiency in modular, scalable system design and distributed applications.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based environments and containerization technologies (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).
  • Experience with performance/load testing tools.
