Technical Educator (GIS) Opportunity: UWE Bristol

We are looking for a passionate and experienced Technical Educator, with a strong background in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially within conservation, environmental, or biological sciences contexts.

In this role, you will oversee and maintain the CHSS GIS suite, ensuring uninterrupted service throughout the year, troubleshooting any issues, and keeping up with new features and emerging GIS-related technologies. You’ll also design and deliver engaging GIS curricula, develop lesson plans, exercises, and teaching materials aligned with module and programme goals. Teaching will involve both small and large groups, assessing practical GIS skills through competency-based evaluations, and offering constructive feedback to help learners improve.

Your responsibilities will extend to managing laboratory and field-based practical activities, supporting student research projects, and maintaining specialist spaces and scientific equipment. You will also play a vital role in the health, safety, and wellbeing of the area by conducting risk assessments and ensuring compliance with university and legal standards.

This position provides an exciting opportunity for you to enhance your knowledge of GIS and adjacent technologies, explore new applications, and refine your teaching expertise.

About You
To succeed in this role, you’ll need robust GIS and geospatial skills, paired with the confidence and enthusiasm to teach and support others effectively. Strong communication skills, a collaborative attitude, and a genuine passion for sharing knowledge are essential. You’ll need to remain composed and focused when managing competing priorities, such as conducting workshops, assisting the wider team, and helping students troubleshoot GIS-related challenges.

Where You’ll Work
This role is based entirely on-site at our Frenchay Campus, a modern and welcoming environment for collaboration and learning.
