We are establishing the Centre for Digital Data Research, a bold new endeavour designed to leverage the potential of digital data for world-class, socially responsible research. This cutting-edge, cross-disciplinary centre will integrate academic and technical expertise with advanced computing power, enabling research at scale—ranging from processing massive, intricate datasets to developing state-of-the-art AI models.
To support this pioneering centre, we are seeking an HPC-Cloud technician/specialist to play a vital role in managing the computational platform that underpins groundbreaking research projects. You will collaborate closely with researchers, Technical Services team members, and colleagues in Information Technology & Digital, ensuring the optimal use of the University’s research cloud platform. Your skills and expertise will be essential in realizing Manchester Met’s ambition to become a leader in digital and data-driven research.
Appointment Details
We are offering two roles to support this initiative:
- Technical Specialist (HPC-Cloud): £35,116 to £39,355
- Research Technical Professional I (HPC-Cloud): £40,497 to £46,735
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide support for HPC systems, both on-premises and cloud-based, including system monitoring.
- Build and configure required software on HPC platforms using appropriate tools.
- Utilize scripting languages such as Bash, Perl, and Python to enable diagnostic monitoring, automation, and queue management.
- Collaborate closely with Technical Services colleagues, other Professional Services teams, and research staff to support and facilitate research projects effectively.
What We’re Looking For:
You bring expertise and experience in:
- Linux operating systems, along with system administration skills.
- Supporting and provisioning HPC systems.
- Scripting languages for automation and monitoring tasks.
- Building and configuring software on HPC platforms using relevant tools and technologies.
- Database administration, Big Data, and Deep Learning technologies.

If appointed to the Research Technical Professional (RTP) role, you’ll be joining a structured promotion pathway featuring three levels (RTP I to III). In post, Technical Specialists can transition to the RTP pathway by working with their line manager to meet the required standards.
