We are launching the Centre for Digital Data Research, an ambitious initiative designed to harness the immense potential of digital data for world-class, socially responsible research. This cross-disciplinary hub will unite academic and technical prowess with advanced computing resources to enable large-scale research—from the processing of vast, complex datasets to the creation and deployment of state-of-the-art AI models.
To support this endeavour, we are seeking a Research Software Engineer who will play a pivotal role in designing, developing, and coding software solutions that drive impactful research. In this role, you’ll collaborate closely with researchers, technical teams, and IT services to deliver innovative software tools that empower our academic projects. Your expertise will directly support the university’s ambition to become a leader in digital and data-driven research.
Role Options and Appointment Details
We are offering this vacancy via two distinct positions:
- Technical Specialist (Research Software Engineering): Grade 7, £35,116 to £39,355
- Research Technical Professional (Research Software Engineering): Grade 8, £40,497 to £46,735
What You’ll Do:
- Analyze research challenges, design tailored software solutions, and evaluate outcomes.
- Apply data analytics techniques—including data pre-processing, exploratory analysis, and advanced machine learning models—to extract insights from complex datasets.
- Lead substantial coding and software development initiatives, including managing database systems for research projects.
- Collaborate with academic researchers, data scientists, technical specialists, and IT professionals to co-develop impactful research software solutions.
- Develop and execute rigorous software quality assurance tests to ensure reliability and functionality.
- Contribute to strategic planning efforts that align with the University’s digital research objectives.
- Demonstrate proficiency in using Linux operating systems for software development.
What You’ll Bring:
- Expertise in programming languages such as Python, R, and C .
- Advanced analytical and problem-solving skills for addressing software development and research challenges.
- Understanding of fundamental data structures and algorithms to design efficient software and machine learning models.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms for data storage, processing, and deployment.
