The Role
The primary responsibility of the post holder is to administer, maintain, and secure the Joint Open Infrastructure for Network Research (JOINER) platform. This platform supports diverse research activities across 15 JOINER nodes in the UK and one in Ireland, with plans for future expansion both nationally and internationally. You will provide technical expertise to a dynamic and diverse user community, offering guidance on best practices and workflow efficiencies. Additionally, your role involves monitoring system usage, analyzing user behavior, and implementing enhancements to optimize service delivery and the overall user experience. You will also support onboarding new users and oversee efforts to extend the platform.
Key Responsibilities
As part of this role, you will:
- Monitor & Maintain Infrastructure: Ensure the health, security, and performance of the JOINER platform while providing robust, reliable operations.
- Analyze & Enhance: Track usage patterns, evaluate emerging technologies, and implement upgrades to improve system effectiveness.
- Support a Hybrid Cloud Environment: Manage VMware and AWS platforms, alongside networking equipment such as Juniper and Fortinet, in data center environments while adhering to change management protocols.
- System Tuning & Incident Management: Perform lifecycle upgrades, patch security vulnerabilities, and respond to issues or outages.
- Automate Processes: Promote automation and continuous improvement to streamline workflows and enhance efficiency.
- Collaborate & Guide: Work closely with academic stakeholders, professional services teams, and vendors to support scalable infrastructure. Mentor junior staff and contribute to planning, documentation, and knowledge sharing.
- User Engagement: Address specialist workflow needs through consultations with researchers, while also managing overarching system performance across the JOINER ecosystem.
- Extend Platform Reach: Assist in the onboarding of new users and participate in the ongoing expansion of the JOINER infrastructure nationally and internationally.
Ideal Candidate Profile
We encourage applications from skilled individuals with hands-on experience in agile, iterative service delivery and the technical expertise needed for this multifaceted role. Ideal candidates will demonstrate:
Essential Skills:
- Solid understanding of networking concepts.
- Proficiency in Linux and Windows system administration, including provisioning, monitoring, and version control.
- Experience in scripting languages (Python, BASH) for automation and software deployment.
- Comprehensive familiarity with Microsoft platforms (e.g., AD, AAD, M365, O365).
- Excellent communication skills to engage stakeholders across varying technical proficiencies.
Desirable Skills & Experience:
- Awareness of hybrid cloud platforms (VMware, AWS, preferably VCF/TCA).
- Working knowledge of network infrastructure (Ethernet, Fibre Channel), storage solutions, and orchestration tools (Kubernetes, Docker).
- Experience with server room operations and data center equipment.
- Exposure to Juniper and Fortinet appliances.
- In-depth knowledge of HALO ITSM tools for both administration and user purposes.
Other Attributes:
- A willingness to travel nationally and internationally to support JOINER node installations and maintenance.
- Possession of a valid UK driving license for travel as required.
