Context:
Celebrating its bicentenary in 2024, The University of Manchester (UoM) was England’s first and most eminent civic university. Manchester has a long-standing, distinguished history in Computer Science research and education. Founded by pioneers like Williams, Kilburn, and Turing, UoM was home to the UK’s first academic Department of Computer Science and one of the earliest undergraduate programmes in the field.

Role Summary:
The University of Manchester is establishing The Furber Chair in Computer Systems Engineering, named in honour of Professor Steve Furber CBE, co-designer of the pioneering ARM processor. This Chair is a key element of UoM’s strategic plan for expansion in Computer Science & Engineering, with a vision for the 2030s and beyond. The position aligns with evolving city, regional, national, and international research priorities, focusing on advanced semiconductor technology and novel computing paradigms.

Responsibilities:
As the Furber Chair, the appointee will:

  • Drive and shape research within the Department of Computer Science, particularly the Advanced Processor Technologies (APT) research group.
  • Conduct research across the Computing Systems landscape, from novel device and processing paradigms to hardware/software architectures and run-time platforms.
  • Cultivate national and international networks and partnerships with industry.
  • Publish high-quality research, secure competitive external funding, and deliver impactful real-world results.
  • Contribute to PhD training programmes and foster an inclusive, nurturing culture for all staff and students.
