Role Overview: Windows Server Specialist
Background
As a Windows Server Specialist, you will be instrumental in maintaining, upgrading, and supporting Microsoft Windows Server environments and their associated services, such as Active Directory, Office 365, Azure, SQL, SCCM, SCOM, and VMware. Your role will involve providing second and third-line support while actively participating in infrastructure integration projects, including those linked to the merger.
In line with City St George’s strategic objectives, you will ensure systems are reliable, interoperable, and equipped to meet the evolving needs of a unified institution. This 12-month fixed-term position will contribute to technical and operational activities generated by the merger, while enabling a seamless transition within the university’s infrastructure.
You will work closely with the Enterprise Technology Services team to uphold best practices, maintain system availability, and deliver robust backend services. These services span networking, datacentres, and telecommunications, all critical to supporting the university’s goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage, administer, and upgrade Windows Server environments alongside associated Microsoft technologies, including Active Directory, Office 365, and Azure.
- Deliver second and third-line technical support, ensuring system availability and alignment with operational standards.
- Lead or support infrastructure integration projects related to merger initiatives.
- Automate routine tasks and enhance operational efficiency through scripting tools such as PowerShell.
- Collaborate with networking, datacentre, and telecommunications teams to provide cohesive backend services.
Person Specification
The ideal candidate will possess:
- Proven expertise in Windows Server administration, Active Directory, Office 365, Azure, and VMware virtualisation technologies.
- Strong experience in scripting (e.g., PowerShell) and enterprise system integration.
- Knowledge of backup solutions such as Veeam, networking principles, and ITIL-based service delivery frameworks.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities, alongside strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently on complex and evolving tasks in a fast-paced technical landscape.
