About Us
The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) carries a proud legacy as Wales’s first university, with its Royal Charter granted in 1828. Today, UWTSD educates more than 16,000 students across six campuses in the UK—four located in Wales and two in England—and maintains long-standing international partnerships in regions such as Europe, China, Malaysia, and the USA, among others.
Our mission is to transform education, and by doing so, transform the lives of individuals and the communities we serve. We are recognized for delivering an outstanding student experience:
- 1st in Wales and 2nd in the UK for Student Satisfaction (Times Higher Education, July 2025).
Our success stems from the dedication, expertise, and collaboration of our staff. Building on this foundation, we aim to establish ourselves as a leading provider of accessible higher education.
The Role
The Institute of Inner-City Learning (IICL), one of four institutes of UWTSD, operates campuses in Birmingham and London. Functioning in a diverse, competitive, and multicultural higher education environment, the IICL delivers flexible learning through multiple intakes each year, continuous teaching cycles, and weekend classes for non-residential students studying at various levels—from Certificates of Higher Education to Doctoral programmes.
The Academic Director (Computing) for the Birmingham Campus will join the institute’s team of Academic Directors (ADTs). The role focuses on providing academic leadership, developing curricula, and managing academic staff. Additionally, the Academic Director will oversee curriculum delivery and ensure the efficient use of resources.
This position works closely with the Dean of Campus and other senior leaders, including the Assistant Dean for Quality and Enhancement (ADQE), the Assistant Dean for Strategic Business Development and Sustainability (SBDS), the Academic Director for Computing (London), and other Academic Directors. Together, the team ensures all IICL campuses adhere to a unified and cohesive academic development strategy.
Key responsibilities include leading improvements in the student learning experience, enhancing teaching methods, and driving scholarly activities across computing programmes. As part of the Birmingham Campus Management Team, the post holder will contribute to UWTSD’s broader strategic goals, including learning and teaching enhancement, research initiatives, and widening access efforts.
Working collaboratively, the Academic Director will ensure consistency and high standards across the Institute’s academic programmes. Weekend programme delivery is a key component, and the post holder must be available on campus during select weekends.
