Role Details

  • FTE: Full-time position, 1 FTE (37 hours per week)
  • Contract Duration: Fixed term for 2 years
  • Annual Leave: 30 days plus standard public holidays, with an additional 4 days allocated for office closure between Christmas and New Year
  • Location: College Lane Campus, Hatfield

Primary Responsibilities

As a Software Engineer, you will:

  • Design, develop, and maintain digital services and applications that support core university operations, ensuring dependability, security, and seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Convert business requirements into detailed technical designs and implement user-centric solutions using iterative Agile methodologies.
  • Take ownership of designated systems, monitoring their performance and usage, identifying trends, resolving issues, and ensuring effective business continuity and disaster recovery arrangements.
  • Support and refine the delivery pipeline by adhering to standard practices that promote efficient and reliable software delivery.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation relating to development, configuration, operational changes, and support processes, while also collecting and reporting key service metrics.

Required Skills and Experience

The ideal candidate will:

  • Have demonstrated expertise in writing reliable, maintainable software, applying established programming frameworks and principles as well as automated testing, basic security protocols, and thorough documentation practices.
  • Be experienced in using version control systems (such as Git), adhering to workflows for branching, code reviews, and releases, and collaborating effectively with team members.
  • Possess a solid understanding of relational databases, including managing data structures, optimizing performance, crafting queries, and ensuring data accuracy.
  • Have practical experience integrating systems via APIs, adhering to interface specifications and data exchange standards.
  • Understand the full software development lifecycle, contributing to stages like design, development, testing, and post-launch maintenance.
  • Exhibit skills in software configuration and operational support.
  • Showcase strong communication and teamwork skills, working collaboratively to share knowledge and resolve issues.
  • Possess excellent analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a calm and methodical approach to handling challenges in a busy working environment.

Desirable Skills
Experience with the following would be advantageous:

  • Modern frontend development frameworks and technologies
  • Containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)
  • Mobile application development or low-code platforms
  • Emerging technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Qualifications

Applicants are expected to have:

  • A degree or equivalent professional experience in a related field.
  • A professional-level qualification or significant demonstrated expertise in computing and software engineering.
