About the Role:
We are looking to recruit three Evening & Weekend Library Assistants. There are two roles available at the Taylor Institution Library and one at the Art, Archaeology and Ancient World Library.

In this role, you’ll provide a warm and professional service to library users and visitors at the Issue & Enquiry Desk, guiding them in accessing library collections, services, and facilities. You’ll assist with user inquiries in person, via phone, and by email, help readers navigate library IT systems and equipment, and carry out a variety of circulation and reader service tasks.

You’ll also be involved in supporting the library’s daily operations through activities such as retrieving, sorting, and re-shelving materials, scanning documents for the Scan & Deliver service, assisting with stock management, and maintaining the overall organisation and accuracy of collections. Your responsibilities will include opening and closing the library, monitoring reading rooms, ensuring safe evacuation procedures when necessary, and promoting an excellent experience for all library users.

This position requires physical tasks such as lifting and transporting library materials, re-shelving books, and working at heights using library access equipment in alignment with health and safety procedures.

These are permanent, part-time roles with the following work schedules:

  • Art Library:

12.25 hours per week (0.3356 FTE):
Mondays, 17:00–21:15
Saturdays, 09:45–18:15 (including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break)

  • Taylor Library Post 1:

12.13 hours per week (0.3323 FTE), based on a two-week rota:
– Week 1: Tue, Wed, Thu (16:00–19:15)
– Week 2: Tue, Wed (16:00–19:15) and Sat (09:45–18:15, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break)

  • Taylor Library Post 2:

12.13 hours per week (0.3323 FTE), based on a two-week rota:
– Week 1: Mon, Thu, Fri (16:00–19:15)
– Week 2: Mon, Fri (16:00–19:15) and Sat (09:45–18:15, including a 30-minute unpaid lunch break)

About You:
The ideal candidate will have:

  • A minimum of GCSE level education or equivalent.
  • Excellent communication skills, demonstrated through clear, courteous, and confident interactions with a broad range of readers and colleagues.
  • A commitment to outstanding customer service and a passion for working in a busy, user-focused environment.
  • The ability to work efficiently as part of a team, as well as independently on routine tasks with precision and attention to detail.
  • Strong general IT skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, and the adaptability to learn and use library systems and online resources.
  • Reliability, punctuality, and flexibility in approach to tasks, including the ability to safely handle physical activities such as transporting and shelving materials.
