Job Summary

The University of Birmingham is seeking a Library Engagement Advisor, who will play a pivotal role in delivering engagement services to Academic Schools. Focused on collaborative work, the team ensures Schools consistently receive excellent services from Libraries and Learning Resources.

This role involves engaging with key academic stakeholders to shape and develop collections and services, promoting relevant resources, and linking Libraries and Learning Resources with the strategic priorities of Schools. The successful candidate will demonstrate expertise in understanding academic needs, communication, organizational strategy, and the management of available resources.


Main Responsibilities

  • Develop in-depth knowledge of the strategies of designated Schools and assess their implications for Libraries and Learning Resources.
  • Stay informed of curricula developments, learning, and research activities in assigned Schools to understand evolving library user needs.
  • Foster strong, credible, and collaborative relationships within Libraries and Learning Resources and across the University’s Schools and professional services.
  • Execute advocacy, communication, and marketing strategies to ensure key stakeholders remain engaged and informed about service developments.
  • Gather and act on feedback from Schools to enhance collection development and coordinate with the Collection Discovery Team to ensure optimal access and value for money.
  • Support efforts to promote collections by leveraging usage data and other metrics for assigned Schools.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • A degree or equivalent formal education.
  • Proven experience in designing and delivering high-quality services for diverse user groups within a results-driven framework.
  • Budget management expertise, specifically for collection development.
  • Customer-focused approach to service design and delivery.
  • Solid understanding of issues relevant to the Higher Education (HE) sector.
  • Strong information technology competencies.
  • Exceptional interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills, with the ability to negotiate and influence diverse stakeholders effectively.
  • Analytical abilities to critically evaluate evidence and apply insights during stakeholder discussions.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage conflicting priorities and deadlines.
  • Agility, initiative, and adaptability in responding to challenges.
  • Ability to translate academic and information strategies into actionable operational plans.
  • Awareness of innovations and trends in library services that could enhance offerings at the University of Birmingham.
  • Understanding of pedagogical practices within the HE sector.

Desirable Criteria

  • A postgraduate qualification in Library/Information Science or a postgraduate teaching qualification.
  • Membership (full or associate) of the Higher Education Academy or another relevant professional organization.
  • Experience working in HE libraries, ideally in academic liaison or academic skills development.
  • Project management experience.
  • Familiarity with the evolving culture and developments in Higher Education.
