About the Role

Oxford Brookes University is seeking a Regulatory and Legal Officer to join its Legal Services team within the Finance and Legal Services Directorate. This permanent position is available either as a full-time or part-time role (minimum 0.8 FTE). Reporting to the Deputy Director (Governance) of Legal Services, the role entails providing critical para-legal and technically qualified support to protect the University’s legal standing, ensure governance compliance, and aid its regulatory obligations.

You will work in close collaboration with University teams such as the Vice-Chancellor’s Office, Procurement, and Finance to bolster the institution’s regulatory adherence and strategic objectives.


About the Team

The Legal Services team is a small, high-performing group based within the Finance and Legal Services Directorate. The team upholds professional legal standards across the University, offering expertise on various matters ranging from corporate filings to contract management, while advancing the University’s governance, risk management, and compliance frameworks.

The team plays a pivotal role in driving Oxford Brookes’ strategic goals by acting as the University’s trusted internal legal advisor and managing relationships with external legal counsel.


Key Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Support the University’s legal operations, maintaining and managing essential technical and business continuity processes.
  • Ensure accuracy in checking, tracking, executing, and documenting legal activities, including administration of the official University seal.
  • Assist University lawyers by managing technical materials, maintaining records, tracking deadlines, updating templates, and coordinating with external legal counsel.
  • Collaborate with internal teams such as Procurement and Finance, offering advice on legal formalities and ensuring the proper use and recording of technical legal materials, including those from Companies House.
  • Compile reports and data tables to support audits and key meetings.

Required Skills and Qualifications

Essential:

  • A UK-recognized professional qualification relevant to the role (e.g., CILEX, NALP).
  • Proven experience managing legally significant workloads within a regulated environment.
  • Ability to assess the accuracy and status of formal legal documents and summarize complex information clearly.
  • Strong proficiency in digital records management with excellent attention to detail under pressure.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving skills with a logical, methodical approach.
  • Outstanding task management skills, including utilizing forward diaries to track progress from inception to completion.
  • Excellent ability to explain legal processes and formalities to stakeholders, with a strong interest in understanding the University’s business context to provide effective legal support.
  • A commitment to confidentiality and adherence to high professional standards, understanding the impact of errors in a regulated setting.
