About the Role
As the Research Platforms Manager, you will bring specialist expertise in hardware, networking, virtualization, Git workflows, and Linux administration to support a collaborative team. Your role will focus on delivering top-quality services to researchers conducting world-class studies across the University. You will be responsible for deploying, configuring, maintaining, testing, benchmarking, and documenting the use of cutting-edge high-performance hardware.
About You
To succeed in this role, you will need a solid background in networking and managing physical server installations in a datacentre environment. Additionally, you should demonstrate:
- Expertise in deploying and managing Linux servers and storage systems.
- Experience in handling firmware updates for peripherals and out-of-band management.
- Proficiency with configuration management tools such as Puppet and Git, as well as mass deployment tools like xCAT.
- A strong understanding of network design, switch configuration, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to gather data from monitoring systems, logs, metrics, and environmental hardware.
You will also have prior experience making changes to live systems using industry-standard best practices and proactively monitoring systems to ensure maximum uptime. Additionally, your role will involve contributing to hardware purchasing decisions, tender proposals, and line management of a junior team member.

This is a hybrid role that allows for a mix of remote work and on-site responsibilities, including occasional office or datacentre visits.
About the School
As the Research Platforms Manager, you will play a key role in overseeing computer hardware and network infrastructure supporting ITS Research Services. This includes managing the University’s 12,000-core, 100-GPU High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster (see QM HPC documentation), in addition to hosting various virtual machines and services. Your work will directly contribute to the success of world-class research across a range of disciplines.
