Senior Cyber Security Engineer

Full-Time (1.0 FTE), 37 Hours Per Week

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Senior Cyber Security Engineer to join our IT Operations team and take a lead in advancing and fortifying the University’s cyber security posture. This role offers an exciting opportunity for a seasoned professional who thrives in technical leadership, solution design, and fostering a “security by design” culture across IT operations.

Role Overview

As the technical lead and subject matter expert for cyber security, you will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing our security controls, tools, and policies. You will work across key areas such as vulnerability management, security tooling, policy development, audit compliance, and incident response.

You will also manage junior cyber security engineers and partner closely with IT colleagues and external providers—including our managed SOC provider—to offer guidance, hands-on support, and expertise to ensure compliance and effective risk management.

This position primarily operates from Park Campus but requires flexibility to travel across all University sites in Cheltenham and Gloucester as needed.

Key Responsibilities

Security Design & Compliance:

  • Design and implement technical security controls.
  • Develop and maintain cyber security policies.
  • Support audits and ensure compliance with established frameworks.

Incident Response & Risk Management:

  • Detect, manage, and remediate security incidents.
  • Execute vulnerability prioritization, risk assessments, and mitigation strategies.

Technical Leadership & Collaboration:

  • Provide expert advice across IT teams, embedding a security-first culture.
  • Collaborate effectively with internal teams and third-party providers.

Planning & Continuous Improvement:

  • Develop and deliver a robust cyber security roadmap.
  • Stay up-to-date on emerging threats, technologies, and industry best practices.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives in security operations.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Strong background in technical cyber security design and compliance.
  • Proven track record in incident response and risk management.
  • Leadership capability to guide teams and promote collaboration.
  • Strategic planning skills with a focus on innovation and improvement.
