About Us:
Network Infrastructure and Services (NI&S), a division of Virginia Tech Information Technology, is responsible for designing and managing the enterprise-scale, high-performance computing and communication networks that drive our institution’s success. Our Software Development team is seeking an innovative and visionary Software Architect to lead the strategic planning and design of secure, scalable, and resilient systems that empower the university to achieve its mission.
As a pivotal member of our agile development team, the Software Architect will bridge the gap between business objectives and technical execution. You’ll oversee system architecture across our business management, infrastructure management, and automation platforms while championing innovation and best practices. Responsibilities:
- Strategically design and architect secure, scalable, and highly resilient systems for enterprise-level applications.
- Collaborate with product teams and stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals.
- Serve as a mentor and guide for development teams, while championing innovation and industry best practices.
- Drive advancements in infrastructure management, automation platforms, and business management applications.
- Oversee integration with external software systems via REST APIs, LDAP, messaging systems, and other technologies.
- Build and maintain automated CI/CD pipelines to enhance development efficiency and deployment reliability.
- Architect and deploy applications in major cloud environments, such as AWS, with a focus on scalability and resilience.
- Support container-based development using Docker, Kubernetes, or similar tools.
Required Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, a related field, or a combination of education and progressive work experience equivalent to a Master’s degree.
- Extensive experience in designing, developing, and deploying scalable production applications using modern programming languages (e.g., Node.js, JavaScript, Java, Python) and frontend libraries/frameworks (e.g., React).
- Proficiency in working with SQL databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or Oracle.
- Expertise in container-based development environments like Docker or Kubernetes.
- Advanced knowledge of major cloud environments (e.g., AWS), including architecture, development, and deployment practices.
- Significant experience in designing automated CI/CD pipelines for streamlined application delivery.
- Comprehensive experience in integrating applications with external systems using technologies such as REST APIs, LDAP, or messaging systems.
- A proven track record of collaborating with stakeholders to craft and implement technology solutions.
- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal, and critical-thinking skills.
Preferred Qualifications:
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate) or equivalent certification.
- AWS Certified Solutions Developer (Associate) or similar credential.
- Experience working in an agile development environment.
- Familiarity with integrating AI-powered solutions for enhancing code efficiency and application development.
- Previous experience within a university or academic environment.
Position Details:
- Employment Type: Regular
- Overtime Status: Exempt (Not eligible for overtime)
- Hours Per Week: 40
- Salary: $128,000 – $142,000
