Background:
Trusted Research Team
The Trusted Research Team operates as a specialized function within the Research Strategy & Services Division (RSSD), offering expert guidance on the legal and regulatory aspects of conducting secure and responsible research. This team plays a pivotal role in assisting the University in navigating complex regulatory frameworks, including Export Control, the National Security & Investment Act, the Nagoya Protocol, and research-related due diligence processes. Working collaboratively with senior academic leaders and various RSSD colleagues, the team provides case-specific advice, contributes to the development of institutional policies, and leads training and awareness initiatives. Their efforts are instrumental in strengthening the University’s research governance and fostering a balanced, risk-informed approach to regulatory compliance.

Role Summary:
As Trusted Research Partner (TRP), you will play a critical leadership role in defining and supporting the University’s practices regarding research security and compliance. Reporting to the Assistant Director of RSSD (Head of Contracts Policy & Compliance) and collaborating closely with College Hub leadership teams, you will offer expert advice on key regulatory frameworks like Export Control, the National Security & Investment Act, the Nagoya Protocol, and research-related due diligence. This senior position contributes to policy development, institutional training, and risk mitigation strategies while working closely with senior academic leaders. The role is suited to candidates experienced in supporting STEM disciplines in research governance environments, with the confidence to engage with scientific content and provide impactful advice on regulatory compliance in a dynamic, research-intensive setting.

Main Duties:

  • Develop Trusted Research Frameworks:

Collaborate with the Assistant Director RSSD and College Hub leadership teams to design and embed the University’s Trusted Research framework. • Serve as a Key Contact:

Act as the principal point of contact for Trusted Research matters, handling case reviews, coordinating referrals to bodies like ECJU and RCAT, and preparing export license applications when necessary. Offer pragmatic, clear guidance to senior academic and professional services leaders on risks and potential mitigations across international collaborative projects, data security, and strategic contracts.

  • Refine Processes and Policies:

Take a leading role in assessing and improving the University’s processes to ensure policies adapt to evolving risks and regulatory updates. Engage proactively with stakeholders to maintain current guidance and confirm compliance in all key areas of the Trusted Research agenda.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications, and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in a research-intensive or regulatory environment.
  • Proven experience supporting academic research in roles focused on governance, compliance, or risk management, preferably within STEM disciplines.
  • Demonstrated expertise in providing senior specialist support for complex legal compliance or regulatory matters, including risk assessment. Additionally, strong skills in communicating this expertise effectively to ensure understanding and compliance across University functions.
